Brees renegotiates contract...

6 posts in this topic

Frees up $24 million in space for this season, now does that mean he comes back or he's still retiring and wants to help out the team?

https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/saints-drew-brees-renegotiating-contract/

The Saints have renegotiated Brees' contract to open up $24 million in 2021, Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football reports.

This move allows the Saints to create cap space now, while waiting until June 2 to officially place Brees on the retired list should he ultimately decide to do so. Basically, they can split his bonus prorations in 2021 and 2022 instead of carrying the entire cap hit at once. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that his contract is now down to base salary. Nothing has officially been announced about Brees' future, but this move is seemingly another signal towards retirement.

First step in the retirement process. Reduce his 2021 salary to reduce the overall cap hit. This immediately frees up some cap space as we head into free agency. Then announce retirement, probably next week. But then Saints wait to place him on reserve retired list after June 1 which allows that overall cap hit to be split between 2021 and 2022. This has probably been the plan all along as the Saints have extended Brees over the last few years. Solid team friendly move by Drew and to me definitely signals his retirement. Otherwise they would have just extended him out yet another year.

The official announcement next week is going to be emotional. Not going to even try to lie about that.

Yahoo is saying we will still be about $78 million over the cap after this. Loomis better start Loomising.

No one Loomises better than Loomis once he starts Loomising.

Nick Underhill has an article up that details how the saints could easily do this without completely blowing up the team
