Jason Kyle, Saints.

This guy is as good a long-snapper as there has ever been, and a great guy to have in the locker room. He’s solid and dependable, but he’s also scheduled to make more than $1 million. The Saints have
Clint Gresham who is scheduled to make about one third of what Kyle is to earn.

It really comes down to the Saints deciding if Kyle is a necessity or a luxury

What is your thoughts about Kyle being on the bubble?

Kyle is a GREAT locker-room guy and would would be wonderful to keep around, but I don't know if they'll keep his salary.

The Saints have a lot of great locker-room guys. That's what made Fujita "expendable."

I don't agree, I don't believe that Fujita was truly 'expendable', I think the F.O. would have liked to have kept him - IMO our back up linebacking corp didn't really carry their weight when Fujita was out last year - I think our not matching Cleveland's bid was more due to the fact that the Browns grossly over paid Scott than any other factor. Hey, look, I really like Scott, but he's not worth that kind of $ and IMO it wasn't unwise to not over pay for his services. I'm just crossing my fingers that someone can step up and fill his shoes (at least) this year. While he wasn't spectacular he was very solid.

Clint Gresham has good potential and im sure he will be able to step in easily for Kyle. The good thing about clint is that he is young and can be our LS for the next 14-5 years without the need for change!

Hokie made a very good point on WWL yesterday. If we go with Gresham,it will mean a different Long Snapper and
a different holder on Fg and Xp attempts this season. It's something we fans don't notice until something goes
wrong. Chase Daniel was the holder in the OTA's he was watching and he struggled fielding the snap cleanly on
more than a few occasions. Last years holder Mark Brunnel is no longer on the team. Hartleys kicking is a huge reason
we are currently champs. How is he going to react to a different holder and possible snapper this year? The FO is banking
he'll do just fine, but we won't really know until it happens in game situations.

Very valid point, only thing I'd say is that judging a new "kick placement" team at OTAs isn't quite fair. The question is whether they can develop into a reliable placement team by preseason, not if they are one out of the box.

Anyway, I don't think Daniel will be the guy, my guess is they'll end up with Morestead doing it.

If Daniel doesn't win QB2 he won't be eligible (assuming he stays on the 53 and is tagged as emergency quarterback, i.e. QB3) to enter games until the 4th quarter (google emergency NFL quarterback if you guys don't know what I'm referring to... it's a weird NFL quirk). So unless they are certain he beats out Ramsey, he seems an odd choice. Moore also seems a bad choice, why would you want your holder to be someone who carries some injury risk. It's not a position you want to replace mid season. Which leaves only Morestead. We don't lose too much in the fake FG department because quite frankly, Payton's never been too into the Fake punt/FG, preferring to use his normal offense instead.

By the way, I have no insight whatsoever into the Kyle situation. It's obviously an important job, but I have no question that if someone could replace 99% of Kyle, free up an additional roster spot, and 2/3 of a mil, Payton may well go with that.

I heard some talking heads say he was a fantastic LS/ST prospect. A great long snapper and a heat seeking missile on special teams. Personally I hope Gresham wins it.

Also, chances are if Kyle is a final cut, he'll be on the couch most of the season and may be available if necessary.

That's why I put expendable in quotes. They really wanted to keep Fujita. He's a great team leader and a good, but aging, linebacker. He may have a bang up year in Cleveland but he was picked up for his intangibles more than his skill I believe. The kind of crazy money that Cleveland threw at him was way beyond his skill set and the Saints just weren't going to match it.

I also hope that we have the talent to pick up the slack but, you are right, we haven't seen it thus far.

I wouldn't mind a younger guy who can do multiple things making the team instead of Jason Kyle. However, I voted him as a necissity, because I don't want us to get into a situation where we lose a game because of lack of experience and a bad playing being made in a clutch situation. The saints have traditionally had good luck with long snappers, so I would feel more comfortable with giving up a roster spot to keep a savy veteran on the team JMO.
