Let's go ahead and get this out there. The Atlanta Falcons are playoff contenders.

The team that was supposed to be the worst in the NFL is not. At the halfway point, their 5-3 record is better than Indianapolis, Minnesota, Green Bay, San Diego and New Orleans, teams that were talked about as Super Bowl contenders back in the summer.

Sure, the kids from Peachtree Street are young, they don't have the most talented roster in the league and they're led by a guy who had never been a head coach at any level and, as recently as a year ago, was an obscure assistant for Jacksonville. They've also been very lucky at times, like drawing Detroit and Kansas City in two of the first three weeks.

But let's stop looking for ways to shoot holes in the Falcons' very impressive half season. Let's look at why they are where they are and how they can get even better. We all know plenty about rookie quarterback Matt Ryan and running back Michael Turner. They each have a shot at the Pro Bowl, but what we see them do on Sundays doesn't tell the whole story.

The Falcons have one of the best coaching staffs in the league and offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey and quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave deserve as much credit for what Ryan and Turner have done as the players do. And don't forget an offensive line that's not especially talented, but has been coached to perfection by Paul Boudreau, one of the league's most underrated offensive line coaches.

It's tempting to not even think about Atlanta's defense because Ryan, Turner and receiver Roddy White are the stories. But you wouldn't be telling the whole story of the Falcons if you ignored the defense. Veteran John Abraham, who got his 10th sack Sunday, is a candidate for defensive player of the year, and rookie linebacker Curtis Lofton is a perfect fit in Smith's system and could be a candidate for NFC defensive rookie of the year. Oh, and how about that secondary that was supposed to be without any talent after unloading former first-round pick DeAngelo Hall in the spring?

It's held up quite nicely.

The Raiders threw for 31 yards -- all day. Ryan passed for 220 against a defense that includes Hall.

Yes, the schedule is about to get a lot tougher. The Falcons host New Orleans next and follow that with two more home games (Denver and Carolina). They go on the road to San Diego and New Orleans. They host Tampa Bay before making their final road trip to Minnesota and finishing the season at home with St. Louis.

Think about it? At 5-3, the Falcons could be in the playoffs if they win four or five of their next eight games. Yeah, it would help if they won their first NFC South game and a couple more.

When you look at Atlanta's schedule, it's a pleasant change from the preseason. Back then, the argument was if the Falcons could squeeze out three or four victories. Nowadays, the question is: How many more wins do the Falcons need to reach the playoffs?

So, i'll go ahead and put on my cape & be Captain Obvious here, but this Sunday's game in ATL is a "must win" "statement" game, whatever you want to call it. Atlanta is a good football team, i wouldn't go so far as to swing from their N**s like this guy above, but this game sunday is gonna be a tough one. At 4-4 all of the questions that we've asked ourselves about this football team still linger. Another HUGE conference game.....

Which Saints Team Shows Up???

Coming off the bye and with 2 weeks to heal injuries, I'd venture to say that we have no excuse but to blow Atlanta out. As a matter of fact, I'd say we should blow out both Atlanta and KC over the next two weeks to even have a shot at staying out of the NFC cellar. Green Bay is a different story and will be a very tough game, but I'd feel much better going into that game at 6-4 and brimming with confidence.

Carolina plays Oakland and Detroit over the next two weeks, so a lost by the Saints in either of the next two games will be a death knell for us. We need 2 wins just to stay 2 games behind the Panthers.

I wouldn't go so far as to call them legit just yet. They've had a good run and have beaten the teams in front of them. But their 3 losses were to Tampa, Carolina and Philly -- three teams right with them in the playoff hunt.

Let's see how they do in December. Right now they're playing with house money.

I wouldn't call teh Falclowns legit just yet. Yeah they have a winning record, but it WAS Oakland. Matt Ryan has been getting alot of hoopla, but Michael Turner is THE GUY in that offense. Stop him and ya stop the Falclowns. Their Defense is just as bad(if not worse) than the Saints defense. I think Brees will be smelling blood on Sunday. :content: I'm optimistic.

The Saints must go atleast 2-0 in this upcoming stretch to stay alive. Losing to ATL or KC will be the nail in the coffin for this season. The NFC is just too good. :doh2:

The falcons are for real. Not great, but a solid football team.

The Saints don't have but maybe 1 win against solid football teams this year, so it will be a tossup.

If we lose to ATL, I don't think there's any way we make the playoffs. In fact, we will probably finish dead last in NFC South.

Say what you want, but the Falcons have been a weekly roller coaster ride themselves. They are like us, they can win on any given sunday and look unstopable, then they follow it up the following week with a goose egg. If only the Bucs would have lost yesterday... :bored:

Brees and company have played very well in the Georgia Dome the past two years. This is the game he and Colston rekindle their connection. The addition of Hollis Thomas will boost our run defense. Big Sed should be at full strength by now. We have to have a big W and I think we are in position to make it happen.
